5 Signs That Sugar Is Aging Your Face

5 Signs That Sugar Is Aging Your Face

sugar_carouselDo you have a sugary donut in your hand? Here’s some news that will make you put down that donut and walk away: sugar ages you.Although there are lots of factors that ruin your skin, sugar is probably one of the worst offenders for outright aging your face and body.

Not only should you be avoiding sugar for dietary reasons (the new US health guidelines recommend you cut way back), you now have the added incentive of protecting your looks from the aging ravages of sugar. You heard it here first: Sugar is the new Big Bad.

Sugar bonds with proteins in your body in a process called glycation. These sugar-bonded proteins produce free radicals which destroy your collagen and elastin, the building blocks that keep your skin strong and supple. They also harden collagen and elastin, and prevent the body from making more. All these effects mean your skin loses its elasticity, lines and wrinkles start to set in, and signs of aging become more visible.

The effects of sugar on your skin are so unique, there are tell-tale signs on your face that sugar is the culprit aging you:

1. The surface of your skin looks hard and shiny.
2. Deep, crosshatch lines appear along your upper lip.
3. Discoloration and hyperpigmentation mark the skin.
4. Deep crevices appear, especially around the laugh line area.
5. Skin around the jowl area is sagging.

The good news is that you’re never too late to prevent the signs of aging. Now you know about the damage that sugar can do to your skin, here’s how you can combat the destruction and look your best:

1. Cut back on your sugar intake, especially food containing high fructose corn syrup.
2. Supplement your diet with vitamins B1 and B6 (Prevention) which inhibit the damage caused by sugar-bonded proteins.
3. Eat food and use products with antioxidants like vitamin C which reduce free radical damage to the skin and body.

Our brand new Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil is infused with oil-based vitamin C that fights the visible signs of aging and smooths wrinkles. Its ingredients also work hard in a preventative way and help reduce further symptoms of aging skin.  With regular use, your complexion will look hydrated, firmer and plumped. Target the sugar-fueled signs of aging with this unique facial oil and reveal your most beautiful, youthful-looking skin.

What I enjoy the most about Novo is the amazing group of people that make up our team. Everyone is different, unique but special in their own way.  We are all respectful of each others differences and beliefs. There are no “superstars”; everyone is equally important”

Gabriel Fernandez – Spa Owner

Study Says Sugar’s Harm Is Not About Weight, It’s Just ‘Because It’s Sugar.

Study Says Sugar’s Harm Is Not About Weight, It’s Just ‘Because It’s Sugar.

SugarThis has certainly been the decade of jumping the sugar ship – and largely with good reason. The studies to illustrate what excess sugar can do to the body keep rolling in. And a new one in the journal Obesity goes a little further by trying to tease apart the difference between cutting out sugar and losing weight. It argues that sugar isn’t bad because it makes you gain weight. It’s bad because it brings about other, more sinister changes to the body – metabolic changes that are distinct from weight. Though this may be true, in part, weight certainly plays a role. So for the purposes of most of us, there may not be much reason to split hairs, since the takeaway hasn’t changed: Sugar is bad for us for multiple reasons, and cutting down on it is usually a good thing.

“This study definitively shows that sugar is metabolically harmful not because of its calories or its effects on weight; rather sugar is metabolically harmful because it’s sugar,” said study author Robert Lustig. “This internally controlled intervention study is a solid indication that sugar contributes to metabolic syndrome, and is the strongest evidence to date that the negative effects of sugar are not because of calories or obesity.”

The researchers studied the effects of sugar-restriction on 43 obese children, aged nine to 18, who had at least one other metabolic problem, like high blood pressure or high triglycerides (blood fats) or markers of fatty liver. For nine days, they ate a sugar-restricted diet, but their calories were kept as constant as possible, by substituting in starches and carbs for the sugars. The goal was to reduce sugar content in the diet from an average of 28% to 10%. But the team did not want the kids to lose weight – they wanted to keep weight constant while simply subtracting sugar from the diet, so see what would happen when this variable to changed but nothing else was.

At the end of the nine days, the kids’ metabolic parameters did shift significantly: Their average diastolic blood pressure decreased by 5 mmHg; their triglycerides were lowered by 33 points; their LDL (“bad”) cholesterol went down 10 points; insulin levels were reduced by a third, and fasting glucose and liver function tests improved.

“All of the surrogate measures of metabolic health got better, just by substituting starch for sugar in their processed food – all without changing calories or weight or exercise,” said Lustig. “This study demonstrates that ‘a calorie is not a calorie.’ Where those calories come from determines where in the body they go. Sugar calories are the worst, because they turn to fat in the liver, driving insulin resistance, and driving risk for diabetes, heart, and liver disease. This has enormous implications for the food industry, chronic disease, and health care costs.”

The study certainly confirms that reducing sugar can make a difference metabolically – and in a short period of time.

“Reducing the prevailing excess of sugar intake is associated with health benefits,” says David L. Katz, founding director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, who was not affiliated with the new study. “That is shown here, and I certainly believe that to be true.”

But there’s a caveat. The researchers couldn’t keep the kids’ weight a stable as they’d hoped. There was an average trend to lose just under a kilogram over the course of the nine days.

“The researchers intended to keep weight stable, and could not,” says Katz. “Why? Presumably because sugar makes food more palatable to those habituated to the high levels that prevail in our culture, and replacing sugar with starch makes food less palatable. Many of the health effects seen here may as much a product of weight loss as they are a product of reduced sugar intake.”

But it may not matter why the kids got healthier, metabolically. That they got healthier, and by many measures, from cutting out sugar is the takeaway. “Whether reducing dietary sugar leads to health benefits mostly directly, mostly indirectly by means of weight loss, or both,” says Katz, “it leads to health benefits just the same.”

The researchers who conducted the study point out that even the kids who didn’t lose weight showed the same trend in metabolic measures. Though this may certainly have been the case, there are probably multiple ways in which cutting out sugar benefits health.

“When obese people lose weight, metabolic improvements occur with the weight loss, no matter what is causing it (even illness),” adds Katz. “But again, that means at worst that reducing sugar in the diet may help get kids to eat less and lose weight, and benefit accordingly. It may mean they benefit directly from the reduction in sugar, independent of calories and weight change. Personally, I think it’s a combination of both effects.”

So keep cutting down on sugar, especially added ones – and help your kids do the same. Whichever way it works, and there may be many, it does seem to work.

Very A-peel-ing

adab_arcticberryadslickIt only seems like a moment ago that we were writing about protecting your skin in the summer months and now the colder months are here. Fall is a fantastic time to repair and rejuvenate the skin after summer, and it is the perfect season for peels.
“Peel” is probably the most intimidating word in the beauty dictionary. But honestly, it isn’t as scary as it sounds.  Chemical peels have been used since ancient times. It is said that Cleopatra applied sour milk containing lactic acid to her skin making her among the first to appreciate the benefits of chemical peels. There are many different options when it comes to peels, many different actives that treat certain conditions better than others.
Peel solutions most typically contain either alpha hydroxy acids (an AHA such as glycolic acid), beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid, also known as BHA), tricholoracetic acid (TCA), or phenol as the exfoliating agent. At Novo we use a wide range of AHA’s, BHA’s and Enzyme peels to treat varying conditions and concerns.
When applied to the skin these acids interact with proteins causing exfoliation and peeling of the skin.  Different acids cause peeling at different depths. Chemical peels can be used to improve acne, pigmentation, wrinkles, skin tone and texture.  They are an excellent way to freshen up the skin and to maintain skin’s health.
Bottom line: The purpose of a chemical peel is to erase imperfections and improve skin tone and texture by removing layers of damaged skin.
Keep in mind that each of these treatment benefits will depend on your skin, the strength of the peel, and the number of peels you get. You will usually need more than one peel to achieve your desired skin results.
Peels are great for everyone but there are some contra-indications so we always do a thorough consultation to make sure it is the right treatment for you and will give you the results you are looking for.
On a side note there are some great at home care peel products and treatments to do in between your spa treatments. At Novo all the estheticians are in love with the results from the Arctic Berry Peel & Peptide Illuminating System from Eminence this is a 10% at home care peel treatment which contains 6 different types of acids (mandelic, lactic, azelaic, glycolic, citric and pyruvic acid)  It is great for this time of year and will last through to Christmas to keep your skin glowing and looking it’s best!
You too can and should think about chemical peels!
Best wishes

Fall season, one of the most important seasons in skin care

Fall season, one of the most important seasons in skin care

As we must restore our skin health after the summer sun and dehydration exposure.

What to do?

Maximum hydration and nutrition
  • Moisturize and nourish your skin with creams and products that are characterized by their extra hydration and emollient properties.
  • Use creams containing hyaluronic acid because it is an element that helps protect and maintain hydration.
  • It is a good time for serums, because its action is more powerful and concentrated.
  • Do not forget the driest areas of the body: legs, knees, heels, elbows, feet. They need more than ever to recover lost moisture.
  • Exfoliation is one of the fundamental actions after the summer, as we must eliminate excess dead cells that summer caused.
  • Creams and vitamin C serums are great allies to end and prevent both sunspots as those caused by age.
  • And do not forget to drink plenty of water and a healthy diet to help restore our skin!

“I have always been really interested in skin care, having problematic skin over the years inspired me further to enter into a career in esthetics,. The education I received was comprehensive, in-depth and intensive it ultimately gave me the tools and knowledge to be able to successfully treat many skin care conditions and problems.
I never stop learning in an industry so fast paced with new products and treatments being introduced all the time it is imperative that you have your finger on the pulse. Aside from treating my guests aesthetically it truly is an honour that guests trust me enough to work with them on such a personal level and this is what I truly love about my job. I hope I make each and everyone one of my guests feel even just a little more relaxed, a little more confident about themselves or a little less stressed in a world with so many pressures and stresses”
Esthetician manager – Charlotte Barbosa
Below I have debunked some of the most common skin care questions I get asked in the treatment room
Myth #1: You don’t need sunscreen on a cloudy day.
Even on a cloudy day, UV radiation from the sun reaches the earth’s surface. So make sure you use sunscreen every day and reapply it every two hours as well as after swimming or sweating.
Myth #2: Toners are the second step in cleansing.
Toners are an important yet misunderstood step in your daily program. You may have heard they are the second step in cleansing: “Wipe your face with a cotton ball soaked in the toner and look at all the dirt it picks up.” What that really means is you didn’t get your skin clean, so it’s time to go back to Step 1: Cleansing your skin. Cleansers cleanse, toners tone or prepare. Toners are not cleansers.
Technically, toners re-acidify the epidermis and prepare the skin for moisturizer. To re-acidify means to replace the skin’s naturally low (acidic) pH which is disrupted somewhat even with gentle cleansers.
Epidermis is just another word for your outer, dead skin, the skin you can touch. So toners help replace the natural acidic state of your skin. Toners are primarily water, so they also superficially hydrate the outer skin.

Myth #3: If a product doesn’t work quickly, move on

It’s crucial to stick to a regimen long enough to see what works for your skin and what doesn’t. “Novo suggests waiting 8 to 10 weeks before you abandon a product and try the next thing”. And keep in mind that not everyone’s skin will respond the same way to an anti-ager. “Most active ingredients do work on everyone—just to varying degrees.

Myth #4: There’s no such thing as too much exfoliating.

Exfoliating is such an essential part of your routine because dead skin must be sloughed off in order for new sebum to secrete from your pores and moisturize the skin. Allowing your sebaceous glands to do their job is the very best way to maintain hydrated skin. It also allows all your other products to work much better. However, exfoliating too much can irritate and dry your skin, and in-turn over stimulate your sebaceous glands causing congestions and breakouts.

Myth #5: My skin is dry (or is it?).

I want to clear up an area of confusion regarding two very different skin types. The misunderstanding surrounds two separate conditions that are thought to be the same: dehydration and true-dry skin.Dehydration deals with surface water loss. True-dry skin reflects a lack of oil. Many people think they have dry skin (because it feels dry), when really they are dehydrated. This distinction becomes very important to make when buying skin care products. True-dry skin = lack of oil. Dehydrated skin = lack of water. You can be oily and dehydrated, but you cannot be both oily and dry. Your oil glands are either producing enough, too much, or not enough oil.

About Eminence

Eminence Organic Skin Care was introduced to North America by Hungarian natives Attila and Boldijarre Koronczay in 1996. The Hungarian tradition of skin care is quite unique and, as a result, Hungarian skin care has developed a substantial following throughout the world. Eminence Skin Care began as an effort to introduce the North American market to organic skin care products produced by a reputable and well established Hungarian manufacturer. Eminence began by marketing Hungarian products that have been in continuous production since 1958. In recent years, however, Eminence has changed its Hungarian manufacturing partners and facilities in an effort to provide a broader array of products of ever improving quality and utility. Today, Eminence is the leading provider of organic skin care products from Hungary within the United States. Eminence Organic Skin Care is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia and the products are manufactured in Hungary.

Eminence is a leader in green practices within the skin care industry. The company’s ingredient farm in Hungary is completely powered by wind and solar energy and utilizes geothermal heating for the laboratory. Natural compost is used as fertilizer. Planting and harvesting are done manually and chemical insecticides are not used. Packaging is also green and consists of innovative recycled and recyclable materials.

Eminence produces its skin care products with organically grown ingredients. The entire line is free of parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, magnesium aluminum silicate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Artificial colors and fragrances are also absent. Eminence formulations are designed to incorporate the highest possible levels hand-selected herbs, fruits and vegetables. The harvested ingredients are processed for four months in controlled conditions to remove naturally occurring bacteria. Mass production techniques involving heating or hydrogenation are strictly avoided. The products are ultimately formulated utilizing pH 9.5 water with trace minerals drawn from a thermal hot spring lake. Product shelf life is in excess of one year with the use of natural fruit pectin derived preservatives.

The Eminence product range is extensive and consists of over five cleansers, five toners, four exfoliants and peels, eye products, lip products, makeup removers, masks, serums/oil concentrates, moisturizers, sunscreens, body washes, body scrubs, and body lotions. There are at least nineteen specific masks, six serums, three oil concentrates, eighteen moisturizers, six sunscreens, two body washes, three body scrubs, and four body lotions. In summary, the line has exceptional depth. This is particularly true since most products are distinct in terms of key ingredients and physical appearance.

Eminence skin care products are intriguing and inviting in large part because of their fresh scents and colorful appearance. The packaging also adds to the allure as it is earthy yet refined eye catching, yet subtle. I found the various natural fragrances and interesting colors representing a broad spectrum of fruits, berries, and other plant-based compounds refreshingly and pleasantly different.

Eminence’s wide range of products is categorized from lightest (for oilier skin) to richest (for drier skin) for particular applications such as cleansers, moisturizers and serums. The company also has some distinct lines including its portfolio including a Biodynamic Collection and a USDA Collection. Biodynamic refers to a self sustaining method of farming that regards the farm as a living organism. In a sense, the majority of the Eminence line is biodynamic. The company has chosen to tag a few new products with this term, however, including the Bearberry Eye Repair Cream which has shown good results in the summarized results of a non-characterized clinical study. The USDA Collection suggests organic certification by the government. The line consists of a new waterless hand sanitizer called Organic Tea Tree & Mint Hand Cleanser, a hand cream and a moisture balm.

Eminence offers a collection of powdered sunscreens called SPF 30 Sun Defense Minerals. These products are similar to other powdered mineral sunscreens but also contain naturally derived vitamins and bioflavonoids. Sun Defense Minerals are packaged differently than most powdered mineral sunscreens and have a user friendly applicator.

Eminence products are eye catching; even the samples look intriguing with products of various colors visible through clear plastic. Using the products on a daily basis is a unique slice of the spectrum of skin care experiences. Each product has an entirely natural complex and balanced fragrance with a true sense of freshness. The fragrances are, generally, transient and of moderate intensity. Using the products is, in a certain way, reminiscent of consuming some of the produce from which the products are derived. Citrus Exfoliating Wash balances physical exfoliation with gentle cleansing in a refreshing and nondrying way. Sugar Plum Oil-Free Revitalizer moisturizes well while remaining light and thus is a good choice for combination skin. Blueberry Soy Night Recovery Cream performs very well as an overnight moisturizer. It hydrates well without irritation or heaviness.

Eminence products are produced in small batches. As such, different batches have slightly different colors and, potentially, very slight differences in fragrance. Eminence packages much of their offering in clear jars. As I’ve discussed before, customers like jars even though they are not always the best choice for products. With Eminence, however, the texture of many of the products is simply not conducive to packaging in pump containers. Additionally, clear jars allow the plant derived product colors a forum for full expression.

In summary, Eminence Organic Skin Care is an attractive and colorful brand that appears to be rapidly expanding in North America. The products are truly unique and, generally speaking, interesting, pleasant and effective. Eminence continues to do an admirable job promoting its product offering and appears to have an exceptionally bright future.
